Biografia artista: Maurizio Cattelan nasce a Padova nel 1960. Formatosi autonomamente, ha iniziato la propria carriera alla fine degli anni Ottanta. Le sue opere, che prendono forma da oggetti e persone del mondo reale, costituiscono il frutto di una operazione dissacrante nei confronti di arte e istituzioni.
Nel 1986 presenta "Senza titolo", considerato dai più una sorta di manifesto del suo lavoro: l'artista ha squarciato la tela in tre punti, per poi incidervi una Z di Zorro alla maniera di Lucio Fontana.
Ha ottenuto popolarità internazionale con "Nona Ora", una statua di cera raffigurante papa Giovanni Paolo II colpito da un meteorite, opera esposta alla Royal Academy di Londra nel 1999. Al 2001 risale "Hollywood", un immenso cartello ricalcato su quello che troneggia sugli studi cinematografici californiani, collocato ironicamente su un deposito di immondizia di Palermo. Alla stessa provocatoria cifra stilistica rimandano singolari iniziative quali il suo ruolo di protagonista nel falso documentario realizzato nel 2006 da Penso e Del Drago "È morto Cattelan! Evviva Cattelan!" in cui egli simula la propria morte.
Nel 2010 realizza "L.O.V.E.", la monumentale scultura in marmo di Carrara posta al centro di Piazza Affari a Milano, di fronte alla sede della Borsa. Il nome è un acronimo di "libertà, odio, vendetta, eternità". L'opera, alta 4 metri e 60 (che diventano 11 complessivi comprendendo il basamento su cui è eretta), raffigura una mano intenta ad eseguire il saluto romano ma con quasi tutte le dita mozzate, come erose dal tempo, eccetto il medio: il gesto irriverente che ne scaturisce, che contrasta ironicamente con lo stile classico dell'opera, sembra così rivolgersi sia all'architettura del Ventennio di palazzo Mezzanotte, sede della Borsa, sia al mondo della finanza che esso rappresenta.
Nel 2011 è oggetto di un vivace dibattito l'installazione di duemila piccioni impagliati presentata alla 54° edizione della Biennale di Venezia, mentre nello stesso anno al Guggenheim di New York è allestita la mostra "All", con oltre 130 sue opere legate al soffitto in un ironico gioco sospeso sull'abisso.
Ad oggi vive e lavora tra Milano e New York.
