Biografia artista: Francesco Messina nasce a Linguaglossa (Catania), ma l'anno successivo la famiglia si trasferisce a Genova. Nella città ligure egli vive un'infanzia umile e già da giovanissimo mostra una forte vocazione alla manualità e all'espressione artistica nelle botteghe artigiane presso cui lavora come apprendista.
Nel 1921 partecipa alla Biennale di Napoli, mentre l'anno successivo espone alla Biennale di Venezia, dove sarà presente ininterrottamente fino al 1942. Nel 1932 si trasferisce a Milano e nel 1934 vi ottiene la cattedra di Scultura dell'Accademia di Brera, di cui diviene in soli due anni il direttore.
È l'autore di alcuni dei maggiori monumenti del Novecento italiano: Santa Caterina da Siena collocata sul lungotevere di Castel Sant'Angelo, la Via Crucis di San Giovanni Rotondo, il Cavallo morente della RAI, il Monumento a Pio XII nella Basilica di S. Pietro. Le sue opere figurano nei più prestigiosi musei del mondo: Berna, Zurigo, Göteborg, Oslo, Monaco di Baviera, Parigi, Barcellona, Berlino, San Paolo del Brasile, Buenos Aires, Venezia, Mosca, San Pietroburgo, Vienna, Washington, Tokyo.
Fino alla sua morte, avvenuta nel 1995 a Milano, continua il suo lavoro di scultore, pittore e poeta.
Di lui Carlo Carrà disse: "Nulla di convenzionale e materialistico appare nelle raffigurazioni di Messina. E ciò accade perché la scultura è un’operazione magica. Pensiero, sogno, fantasia, volontà, intuizione si collegano in questi bronzi con armonie di forme e di espressione”.
